About Epilepsy
Epilepsy is the third most common neurologic condition. About 1 percent of the population, or about 30,000 people in San Diego County, are living with this disorder. As of 2006, the UCSD Epilepsy Center is monitoring more than 100 patients per year to evaluate their seizures.
Epilepsy may begin at any age. The causes are varied and the diagnosis is not always easy. Undiagnosed and uncontrolled, it may progressively alter normal brain function and create serious social and psychological problems. For this reason, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
