Family Medicine's Approach to Care |
 |
Our UCSD Family Medicine practice will provide you and your family with the “6 C’s” of modern primary care:
-
First Contact – when you have a medical or emotional problem we are often the first place you call to get help.
-
Continuity of care – as we get to know each other a relationship develops; we call this the doctor-patient-family relationship. This connection between you and your doctor facilitates sensitive communication about your medical concerns and allows us to really get to know you and your health care needs.
-
Comprehensiveness – About 85-90% of the time we will be able to help you directly with your concerns. We provide care for acute problems, chronic medical illness, behavioral and emotional counseling, obstetrical care, minor office surgery and preventive and screening services.
-
Care Coordination – when our own office team - composed of physicians, our family medicine residents, nurses, medical assistants, marriage & family therapists, psychologists and health educators - can’t provide the definitive answer for your problems, we will refer you to our UCSD specialist colleagues and assure that your care is coordinated, that all our health care teams work to your benefit and that everything is clearly explained to you.
-
Understanding the Context of your life circumstances including your belief systems, your culture and your community is key to our relationship. Each patient is different and these contextual elements of your life play a large role in how you feel about health and emotional issues and how you want your health care team to work with you.
-
Competence – The practice of modern medicine depends on evidence. We are a University-based practice and are committed to using the best science available today to help you with your problems. UCSD is on the cutting edge of producing such scientific advances. But with all we have available, it is also most important to know when and how to use our science to produce the safest and most cost-effective care. All of us are dedicated to using the best evidence from the scientific literature, what we call practicing “evidence-based medicine”.
