Medical Education and Practice-Based Research in Family Medicine

Medical Education

As a University-based family practice, UCSD Family Medicine is dedicated to medical education and research as well as delivering health care. Our faculty physicians are actively engaged in training tomorrow’s family physicians. Patients will see this training in action through our Continuity Care Teams.

Our Continuity Care Teams are composed of our faculty family physicians and our family medicine residents, and we are often also accompanied by our assigned medical students.  These learning future colleagues will participate in your care.  We strongly believe that their presence is a very significant contributor to the quality of the care you receive.  Their quest for knowledge and learning keeps us all on our mental toes and adds to the level of science we bring to bear on your health care.

Practice-Based Research

Through “practice-based research," we are constantly monitoring how we are doing in delivering your care.  Computerized medical records and our dedication to practicing “evidence-based medicine” have made it possible to measure how and what care we deliver and what kind of health outcomes we, working together with you, actually do achieve.  How many of our smokers quit?  How many of our diabetics have their sugar under control?  How many of our patients receive the proper immunizations?  Knowing how we are doing is critically important to the quality of service you receive.

Your participation is needed in this effort.  By signing up as a participating member of our “Practice-based Research Patient Corps” we will be able to review the care you are receiving and figure out how to improve it.  We can also contact you with other research opportunities that arise that might be beneficial to you or to other patients with similar conditions.  We hope you will thoughtfully consider this invitation to help us improve the quality of our care for all our patients.
