Candidate Eligibility and Body Mass Index Calculator

Eligibility Criteria

Gastric banding is not right for everyone. Review the following criteria and calculate your BMI in the body mass index calculator on the bottom left of page to find out if it’s right for you

It might be right for you if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are severely overweight.

  • You have been overweight for more than 5 years.

  • Your serious attempts to lose weight have had only short-term success.

  • You do not have any other disease that may have caused your obesity.

  • You are prepared to make substantial changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.

  • You are willing to follow a pre-operative nutritional program to prepare you for the procedure.

  • You are willing to continue being monitored by the specialist who is treating you.

  • You do not drink alcohol in excess.

Please discuss your individual eligibility further with our surgeon during your initial one-on-one consultation.

Calculate Your Body Mass Index

A measurement used to assess health risks of obesity itself is Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing body weight (lbs.) by height in inches squared (in2) and multiplying that amount by 703.

The ideal body weight for your height should result in a body mass index of between 19 and 24.9. If you have a BMI above 30, you are considered obese and may be a good candidate for weight loss surgery.

  • Calculate your BMI using the tool in the left column of this page and then review the chart to see if your health is at risk.
