What’s Your Destination?

Natalie Cook
When you plan a trip, you generally have a destination in mind. You figure out how you’ll get there and how long it might take, right?

Your weight loss journey should include a plan and a destination as well. After all, how can you get there if you don’t know where you are going?

Begin by planning how you intend to facilitate your weight loss with the gastric band by watching your fat intake and calories, and by exercising on a regular basis. Then, decide on your destination, or goal. Not having this destination in mind may stall your weight loss without you even realizing it.

Many of us tend to be visual learners, so I recommend having a vision of how you want to look upon reaching your goal weight. The visual image for me was some old pictures of me weighing around 140 pounds and some size 8 clothes in my closet that I was hoping to fit into again.

Natalie Cook: Before
Here I am in 2003 before I started my journey.
If you have never been of average weight before, this vision can be difficult to see in your mind’s eye. In this case, pick out someone whose size or shape you admire and use that as your visual goal. And let’s be reasonable; we are not aiming for size 0 or 2!

Once you have an image of where you would like to go, it will be much easier to get there. I highly recommend visualizing before you go to sleep at night or before you get out of bed in the morning. See the image of how you would like to be and think about what you need to do that day to help yourself get there.

Your mind is a very powerful tool that you can learn to use to your advantage. It’s time to start deprogramming the negative thoughts and images and replace them with new positive ones.

Bon voyage, and best wishes on your weight loss journey to a happier and healthier life!

Sincerely,
Natalie Cook Akhavain
