Cytogenetics Laboratory

The UCSD cytogenetics laboratory is a full service facility providing chromosome analysis of prenatal, somatic and cancer specimens.

Interpretation of test results and counseling for recurrence risk is an integral part of this service.

The laboratory is staffed by accredited cytogenetic technologists and under the direction of clinical cytogenticists certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics.

The laboratory is licensed by the State of California Department of Health as a clinical testing site (license number 210270) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (23187-07).

Types of specimens analyzed include:

• Amniotic fluid
• Chorionic villi
• Tissues (products of conception, skin biopsies, etc.)
• Peripheral blood
• Leukemic blood
• Solid tumors

Tests performed

• Chromosomal analysis on blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, chorionic villi, and tissue specimens
• F.I.S.H. (Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization) analysis
