UCSD Medical Center’s Huntington’s disease (HD) program was designated a Center of Excellence in 2000 by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Under the direction of Jody Corey-Bloom, M.D., Ph.D., clinical professor of neurosciences, our center was among the first treatment and research centers west of the Mississippi to receive this honor.
An inherited and degenerative brain disorder that strikes men and women typically between the ages of 30 and 55, HD causes involuntary movements, severe emotional disturbance and decline in the ability to think and reason. It has been diagnosed in 30,000 Americans, with another 150,000 at risk since family members have a 50 percent chance of inheriting Huntington’s from an affected parent.
Symptoms of Huntington's Disease
Early symptoms of HD may affect cognitive ability or mobility and include:
- depression
- mood swings
- forgetfulness
- clumsiness
- involuntary twitching
- lack of coordination
As the disease progresses, concentration and short-term memory diminish and involuntary movements of the head, trunk and limbs increase. Walking, speaking and swallowing abilities deteriorate. Eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself.

Treatment
Since the discovery of the gene that causes HD, scientific research has accelerated and much has been added to the understanding of Huntington's and its effects.
Patients referred to the UCSD Huntington’s Disease Center benefit from advances made by multidisciplinary teams of neurologists, geneticists, neuropsychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, nutritionists and other outstanding specialists. These highly skilled individuals not only provide outstanding clinical care, but also work closely with colleagues in the research setting to find a cure or possible treatment.
Each and every day, our internationally recognized specialists are continually working toward the goal of making the current generation of people with HD the last to suffer from this devastating genetic disease.
