UC San Diego Medical Center offers a 43-week dietetic internship with a Nutrition Therapy concentration in a progressive academic medical center environment. The medical center, located in San Diego, is a large tertiary care hospital that provides the highest level of specialty care in the region. Under the supervision of Registered Dietitians, dietetic interns will rotate through experiences in:
- Clinical nutrition
- Service management
- Ambulatory/community nutrition
Accreditation Status and the Credentialing Process
Students completing the academic requirements from a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) are eligible to apply to a dietetic internship program. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to write the registration examination to become a Registered Dietitian. Human Resources Requirements
Upon acceptance to the UC San Diego Medical Center Dietetic Internship, the accepted applicant must undergo a California State Criminal Background Check at no expense to intern. The intern will complete this process through the Human Resources department at no charge to the dietetic intern. Successful admission into the program is contingent on the background check. This is consistent with University procedure for all staff, residents, interns and volunteers.
Upon acceptance to the UC San Diego Medical Center Dietetic Internship, the accepted applicant must obtain a health clearance from The Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (COEM). COEM is responsible for the Employee Health Services. Interns must complete a pre-employment physical exam that includes a TB skin test and drug screen at no expense to intern. Appointments will be made during Orientation week (or before) by the Internship Director to ensure clearance is granted prior to the intern starting in rotations. False information or misrepresentation may disqualify applicants and/or be grounds for dismissal from program.
