Maternal Weight and Wellness Program
If you are overweight, our team of specialists wants you to have a healthy pregnancy and to optimize the outcomes for both you and your baby. We provide an opportunity for you to manage your weight before, during and after your pregnancy.
About pregnancy and obesity
Obesity in pregnancy is very common. Approximately 1 in 5 women delivering babies in San Diego County begin their pregnancies obese. These women are at risk for complications during and after pregnancy, including too much weight gain, hypertension, diabetes, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cesarean deliveries, postpartum depression, and breastfeeding issues. Their babies are also at increased risk for complications, including birth defects and pediatric obesity.
Many women also report that their weight gain was not addressed by their doctor during pregnancy or postnatal care, according to research by Dr. Yvette LaCoursiere, the UC San Diego obstetrician who oversees prenatal care for the Maternal Weight and Wellness program.
About the Maternal Weight and Wellness Program
UC San Diego Health System’s Maternal Weight and Wellness Program is the one place in San Diego for comprehensive, compassionate obstetric care for women who are overweight or who have had bariatric (weight loss) surgery.
Women with a BMI of 35 or higher, or those who have had bariatric surgery, have special needs during pregnancy. Working with a team who understands their challenges — and can provide customized care and support — results in healthier outcomes for both mothers and babies.
