The UCSD Department of Orthopedic Surgery spine specialists are leading the way in comprehensive care and treatment of spinal disorders. These specialists are continually developing new procedures by being at the forefront of clinical research to find the most efficient and effective treatments.
Steven R. Garfin, M.D., Professor and Chairman
Dr. Garfin is a prominent orthopaedic surgeon with a distinguished record of clinical excellence and research achievements. His leadership has included terms as President and member of the Board of Directors of most national and international spine societies. He trains both orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons in spine care at UCSD. He has been involved in a number of clinical trials related to new techniques to treat spinal deformities and injuries. He has published over 200 articles, authored 75 book chapters, and edited nine books.

Yu Po Lee, M.D., Assistant Professor
Dr. Lee is the newest addition to the UCSD Spine Surgery team. He trained at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at UCLA.

Douglas Chang, M.D., Ph.D
Dr. Chang focuses his clinical practice on the conservative treatment of back pain, and his research is on the etiology and treatment of back pain. His practice includes selective electrophysiologic studies and spinal injections. In addition, he will be providing general orthopaedic and sports medicine services.
Liz Stimson, M.S., N.P.
Ms. Stimson is currently a nurse practitioner in orthopaedic surgery spinal disorder. She has also practiced nursing in inpatient oncology and outpatient administration.
