WELCOME TO THE UCSD EATING DISORDERS treatment and research program
This UCSD program offers the assurance of evidence-based treatments delivered in a warm and caring environment. Our staff consists of experienced professionals specializing in eating disorders and providing state of the art treatments based on patient needs.
Our understanding of the causes of anorexia and bulimia nervosa is changing. We now know that people are born with genes and brain neurochemistry that contribute to certain temperaments that put people at risk for developing these disorders.
While society and culture are contributory, they are NOT the main or only cause. Similarly, parents do NOT cause their children to have eating disorders.
It has been difficult to treat eating disorders. New understandings of the causes of these disorders are making it possible to provide more effective treatment.
We are a university-based program. Our faculty has made major contributions to developing much of this new understanding about the causes and treatments of AN and BN.
Treatment in our program is delivered by staff who are psychiatrists and psychologists or have other advanced degrees. Each has many years of experience in the treatment of ED.
