Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic |
|
The UCSD Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Clinic treats approximately 160 persons with CF from San Diego County and surrounding areas. The population of cystic fibrosis patients is growing, as the majority of pediatric patients are now living well into adulthood. In fact, there are many people with cystic fibrosis who may now anticipate a normal life span.
The faculty at UCSD is continuing to identify and research solutions to problems that are specific to the adult population. Some of these issues are medical, while others are related to quality of life. The center is also developing a network of resources to assist our patients.
Among the health and life issues of importance to CF patients are:
- Diabetes - As cystic fibrosis-related diabetes is being identified more frequently, UCSD is making a concerted effort to improve identification of early-stage disease and provide state-of-the art treatment.
- Osteoporosis - This is a common complication for adults with CF as a result of chronic malabsorption, use of steroids or endocrine-related problems.
- Reproductive issues - Our center is prepared to provide resources and referrals for contraception, fertility procedures (available for both males and females) and genetic counseling. The UCSD Cystic Fibrosis Center also works with the Teratogen Registry (which identifies high risk medications) to help ensure a healthy pregnancy.
- Mental health issues - Depression is common in persons who live with chronic illness, and life issues can be complex for adults with CF. Every effort is made to identify, treat and counsel patients during the course of their treatment.
- Quality of life - Our Quality of Life testing enables us to measure different types of treatments and their effects on patients.
- Financial - Persons with cystic fibrosis need to be apprised of the resources available to them. Assistance with medical insurance, disability options and advocacy for patients in the workplace are ongoing at UCSD.
- Education - The center provides ongoing patient education on a variety of issues, including intimacy in relationships, transplant information and insurance and durable power of attorney.
Clinic hours are Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.To schedule an appointment at the Clinic, call (858) 657-7073.
