Cystic fibrosis patients requiring admission are preferentially cared for at Thornton Hospital. Our staff are familiar with the CF population, and boast years of experience working with our patients' needs.
Typical reasons for inpatient admission include:
- Pulmonary exacerbation
- Bowel obstruction
- Failure to thrive
Patients are typically managed by the UCSD Hospital Medicine service, with consultation by Dr. Conrad or Dr. Shaw throughout their stay. During a typical admission, patients receive respiratory therapy sessions 4 times per day, working with our RT staff to provide the most beneficial airway clearance therapy possible.
Spirometry is typically performed twice per week on Monday and Thursday, to track responses in lung function during periods of pulmonary exacerbations. A 6-minute walk test is performed every Wednesday, used as a marker for functional performance.
During their stay, CF patients will generally receive a "high protein/high calorie" diet, with an emphasis on building muscle mass and regaining lost pounds.
For additional supplements or meals, our CF inpatients can dial 858-657-6470, or x76470 from the phone in the room. This hotline is made specially available only to our CF patients, in an effort to suit their increased caloric needs.
