The UCSD Stroke Center has been recognized by the University Health-System Consortium (UHC) as one of the nation’s top academic medical centers providing stroke treatment. In a nationwide survey of 33 academic medical centers and 1,227 patients, the UCSD Stroke Center ranked second overall, measured against a variety of clinical benchmarks, including complication and death rates, length of hospitalization, diagnostic tests, and health counseling prior to discharge.
The UCSD Stroke Center has long been a national leader in stroke treatment. In fact, in the 1990s the UCSD Stroke Center led the National Institutes of Health-sponsored clinical trials of a new clot-busting therapy for stroke. If used properly, this therapy—tissue plasminogen activator or tPA—results in a 30 to 50 percent increase in the number of stroke survivors who are functionally independent three months after their stroke.
Over the past two decades, we have developed considerable expertise in the field of emergency resuscitation of stroke patients, and continue to lead the community in the treatment of stroke through education of physicians and patients and the development of novel approaches to treatment.
