Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

The UCSD Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery is a team of seven surgeons, under the leadership of Dr. Stuart Jamieson. The faculty are known throughout the world for their pioneering research and innovative surgical therapy. Since 1989, when our program began, we have performed more than 20,000 major heart and lung operations.

In addition, UCSD is the international center for the surgical management of pulmonary hypertension. Our surgeons have performed over 2,000 pulmonary thromboendarterectomies (PTE), the largest number in the world.

Our division specializes in all aspects of cardiothoracic disease including:

Our physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and social workers pay attention to detail – from your first consultative visit, throughout hospitalization, and on through post-operative follow-up care.  Twenty-four hours a day, our nurse practitioners are available for outpatient consultation and visits.

Our academic faculty are continuously involved in clinical and basic science research. We are devoted to finding new therapies that will safely and effectively improve your quality of life.
