Our specially-trained surgeons and staff are well equipped and dedicated to the care of our hernia patients. They have advanced training in open and laparoscopic techniques and have performed thousands of hernia procedures.
The director of the UCSD Hernia Center, Dr. Garth Jacobsen, specializes in leading-edge minimally invasive techniques and robotic surgery, and is also a pioneer in the field of "scarless surgery," also known as the NOTES (Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery) procedure. At the Hernia Center, patients may have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials using this surgical technique of the future.
Most of our hernia surgeries are performed at Thornton Hospital in La Jolla or at the University Ambulatory Surgery Center, also in La Jolla.
