Christopher J. Kane, MD
Prostate Cancer, Other Urologic Cancers, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques
Dr. Christopher J. Kane is a specialist in prostate cancer and renal cell carcinoma and is internationally recognized for excellence in patient care and research. Dr. Kane offers minimally invasive surgical treatments to patients with urologic diseases. He is an expert in robot-assisted prostatectomy, open and laparoscopic kidney cancer surgery, and bladder and testes cancer surgery. Dr. Kane is the most experienced robotic surgeon in the region, performing over 200 procedures per year. He has published over 190 articles and serves as the co-chair of the National Cancer Institute’s Renal Cancer Task Force.
As a military officer and surgeon, Dr. Kane served in the medical corps in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. His numerous military honors include the Navy Commendation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Ithaar H. Derweesh, MD
Kidney Cancer, Urologic Oncology, Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques
Dr. Ithaar Derweesh is a urologic oncologist whose specific interests include kidney preserving treatments for kidney cancer (partial nephrectomy), minimally invasive treatments for kidney cancer (laparoscopy, cryoablation, laparoscopic and robotic partial nephrectomy), minimally invasive kidney reconstruction (laparoscopic and robot-assisted pyeloplasty), and bladder and prostate cancer (robotic prostatectomy and brachytherapy).
Dr. Derweesh has built one of the nation's busiest single incision laparoscopic urologic surgery programs, with several world- and California-first procedures. He serves on the AUA Guidelines Committees for Management and for Follow up Care of Renal Tumors.
Karim Kader, MD, PhD
Bladder Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Other Urologic Cancers, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques
Dr. A. Karim Kader is one of the most experienced surgeons in the United States performing robot-assisted radical cystectomy and urinary diversion for patients with bladder cancer. Dr. Kader holds several patents for genetic discoveries that hold significant promise for early detection and prevention of prostate cancer. He is the principal investigator in numerous clinical research projects and has published extensively. His research interests include genetic markers of risk and outcome in urologic cancer.
J. Kellogg Parsons, MD, MHS

Dr. J. Kellogg Parsons is Associate Professor of Surgery at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. He specializes in prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer. He is an expert in robot-assisted surgery, prostate laser surgery and cryosurgery. Dr. Parsons is an internationally recognized expert in prostate disease and urologic oncology. He has received research grants from the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, and Department of Defense. He has won numerous awards for his scientific research, lectured extensively across the US and Europe, and sits on several national committees for the American Urological Association.
Kyoko Sakamoto, MD
Endourology, Laparoscopy, Neurourology
Dr. Sakamoto is chief of urology at VA Medical Center, San Diego. She performs numerous minimally invasive endourologic procedures, including laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic kidney surgeries, and robotic surgeries. She also specializes in minimally invasive techniques for management of stones in the upper urinary tract. In her research at UC San Diego, Dr. Sakamoto focuses on developing new, minimally invasive technologies for early diagnosis of urological diseases. She is also involved in basic science research studies in physiology and diseases in urology.
