Simultaneous Kidney-Pancreas Transplant

Simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplantation (SKP) offers successful therapy for patients with juvenile onset diabetes (type I) and end-stage renal disease. Pancreas transplantation provides individuals with juvenile onset diabetes (type I) a potential cure for their disease. At the UCSD Center for Transplantation, these advanced procedures are giving new hope to many people with type I diabetes. The UCSD Center for Transplantation performed the first kidney transplant, the first SKP procedure and first pancreas alone transplant in San Diego County.

Marked by an exemplary combination of dedicated professionals, the pancreas and kidney-pancreas transplant team offers specialists for all aspects of patient care. Teams include surgeons, infectious disease specialists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, laboratory specialists, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, dietitians, physical therapists and occupational therapists. In addition, highly educated clinical transplant nurse coordinators participate as critical members of the team and coordinate all aspects of patient care. These transplant coordinators often develop close, lifetime relationships with patients, families and the referring physicians.

In addition, the UCSD Center for Transplantation provides comprehensive support services to meet the specialized needs of transplant patients and their families. Services include patient and family support groups, psychiatric services, social services, financial services, nutritional counseling and chaplain services.
