The UCSD Liver Transplant Program has performed more than 200 liver transplants. Our excellent reputation for advanced care leads to referrals from throughout the region for complex hepatology cases, including patients suffering from hepatitis C and other forms of liver disease. UCSD’s academic medical center and clinical research programs allow us to offer the latest treatments and to continually improve the techniques and procedures provided by our liver transplant team.
Transplantation options to liver transplant candidates:
- living-related donation – a procedure in which part of the liver is taken from a healthy living donor (usually a close relative). This procedure addresses the shortage of donor organs, reduces problems associated with graft function, and increases patient and graft survival rates.
- cadaveric liver donation -- for this procedure, patients remain on the waiting list until an appropriate sized liver becomes available. A procedure called split liver transplantation allows a cadaveric donor liver to be divided into two sections, so that the smaller portion may be given to a pediatric recipient and the larger portion to an adult recipient.
The UCSD Center for Transplantation is also involved in the development and testing of the extracorporeal liver assist device (ELAD). This device is designed to serve as a temporary liver support for patients with acute liver failure, acting as a bridge until their own organ recovers or a suitable organ becomes available for transplantation.
