Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

The SICU is a 20-bed, fast-paced, high-acuity, multi-specialty critical care unit. The surgical specialties supportive of the SICU include trauma, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, transplant (heart, lung, liver, and pancreas), orthospine, ear nose and throat, plastics, vascular surgery, general surgery, and high risk obstetrics. The SICU is adjacent to the three-bed Level 1 Trauma Center. 1,600 patients were admitted to the SICU last year. During times of peak patient admission, the SICU has the ability to overflow to an additional six beds.

In the SICU, patients benefit from the coordination of multi-specialty medical care that is commonly delivered by specialty teams to critically ill patient. All the services and professionals necessary to treat a patient in trauma are brought together with the common mission of providing excellent care to the residents of San Diego County.
