Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Disease in Women

It is important for all women to keep in mind that men and women can have different symptoms when faced with a heart attack, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, arrhythmias or symptoms of angina or TIA (transient ischemic attack).  Don’t wait for severe classic heart attack symptoms such as chest pain, pressure “like an elephant sitting on your chest," or classic brain attack (stroke) symptoms like partial paralysis before seeking help. Take our self-assessment now to learn about and manage your risk factors early to help avoid having a cardiovascular event. 

As part of your personalized evaluation, the UCSD Women’s Cardiovascular Health Program staff will develop a thorough understanding of your medical history combined with a complete cardiovascular physical examination. Additional laboratory tests may also be recommended to learn more about the condition of your heart and blood vessels.   

Some of the tests developed for identifying CVD are less accurate when performed on women than men.  We understand that, because we specialize in diagnosing and treating only women. Many times, it will take a combination of tests and heart imaging techniques for us to determine whether serious CVD is present.
