Lap Band Illustration Stein Institute for Research on Aging: Lecture Series

Overview: Topics and speakers for this informative lecture series include:  Dilip Jeste, M.D., "Successful Cognitive and Emotional Aging" (June 18); Dr. Daniel Kripke, "How Sleeping Pills Can Harm You" (July 16); Nazneen Dewji, Ph.D., "Novel Approaches to the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease" (Sept. 17). Overview: If you or someone you know is struggling with severe obesity, the UCSD Medical Center’s LAP-BAND® Program for Obesity can help. The program offers patients an outpatient surgical solution for long-term weight loss.

With a highly trained team of surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, exercise therapists and psychologists, UCSD’s LAP-BAND® Program is able to provide patients with the safest, least invasive and only reversible weight loss procedure now available in the United States. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - Eight Week Course

Overview:  This course consists of eight weekly classes from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and one daylong class on a weekend. It includes guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices, gentle stretching and yoga, home assignments and group dialog. Note: Anyone who wishes to participate in our MBSR courses must attend an informational session.  Healing Foods Kitchen Cooking Class

Overview: The UCSD Health Behavior Studies Counseling Team will teach you how to prepare easy and healthy recipes using foods that promote health and help fight disease. Classes will include demonstration, discussion about ingredients, recipes, tasting, and educational handouts.  Graft vs Host Disease Support Group

Overview: This support group is for patients who have had an allogeneic stem cell transplant from a family member or an unrelated donor. Patients develop graft versus host disease (GVHD) when the bone marrow of the donor does not recognize the recipient as its own and attempts to reject it. It can be acute or chronic. The effects of GVHD may create a variety of challenges for the individual. Please join this group for support and to learn ways to handle the difficulties of GVHD. This group is partially funded by a grant from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.


 Grupo Esperanza - Spanish Speaking Patient Support Group

 Scrapbooking Group For Cancer Patients & Family Members

Overview: Make you memories last forever. Join us in a relaxed atmosphere and create a scrapbook album of your treasured photos, writings, letters and drawings. Group leaders will assist you in creating a unique scrapbook album of memories. No experience is necessary.

Connect with others in a supportive, casual and enjoyable setting. Each participant will receive a gift basket with basic supplies to begin a scrapbook album. Drinks and Snacks will be provided. This group is at no charge to you. Please bring your personal collection of photos, writings, letters, poems, drawings and scissors.

Research shows that these techniques help most cancer patients reduce pain, anxiety and side effects of chemotherapy.

Overview:  This support group, comprised only of patients who have had Lap-Band surgery, will focus on the issues and changes associated with diet, nutrition, and lifestyle that accompanies the procedure. This support group will provide a safe environment in which everyone is able to participate, share, ask questions, exchange advice and find support. Periodically, speakers will be brought in to discuss relevant topics and provide further education.

Groups will meet on an ongoing monthly basis. They are drop-in groups, registration beforehand is not required.
