Become a Volunteer

How to become a volunteer

The process to become a new volunteer is as follows:

Attend an orientation and turn in the three application forms
Commit to 100 hours/6months of volunteer service (once a week for four hours).
Have a placement interview.
Complete initial T.B. skin test. (free at UCSD Medical Center) at placement interview and have it read 2 -3 days later.
Be screened for immunity to Mumps, Measles, Rubella and Chicken Pox (Varicella). This is done by a blood draw (free at UCSD Medical Center) at placement interview.
Complete new employee oriention online training.
Purchase a uniform ($20).
Obtain an ID badge ($5 to replace if forgotten or lost)
Obtain free parking permit.
Be scheduled for a department specific training.
Complete the six-week T.B. skin test

Competencies of Successful Volunteers

We are not able to accept court-ordered service applications

Good communication skills in English.
Self-starter who needs minimal supervision.
Good listening skills and ability to follow instructions.
Dependable and flexible.
Positive and professional attitude.
Physical ability to perform tasks of assigned work area.

Volunteer Dress

Volunteers should be easily recognizable by staff and patients. A standard uniform and nametag insure immediate identification. Volunteers should maintain clean uniforms and shoes, present a well-groomed image, and show courteous manners. Uniform includes clean white or khaki (tan) pants with uniform top and closed toe/rubber soled shoes.
