Preparation for Childbirth (4-Class Series)

Overview: This is a series of four 2-hour classes addressing fetal development, body changes, the labor process, labor coping skills, labor review, OB procedures, and postpartum care. Includes information on delivering in both the Birth Center and Labor & Delivery Unit. Course book included.

Preparation for Childbirth (6-Class Series)

Overview: A series of six 2-hour childbirth preparation classes addressing birthing options, the stages of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, pain relief options, delivery procedures and postpartum care.  Includes practice of breathing and relaxation techniques and labor review. 

Childbirth Basics (One-Time Class)

Dates, Times & Locations:

• 3rd Monday every month beginning March 2007, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at UCSD Ambulatory Care Center, OB/GYN Clinic
• 4th Thursday February, April, June, August, October & December, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at UCSD Scripps Ranch, Suite 200 (more dates & times to be determined)

Fee: $25 per couple
Overview: A one-time 2-hour class that provides a basic overview of the birth process, including signs of labor, when to go to the hospital, stages of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, options for pain relief, hospital procedures, and helpful tips for labor & birth. A film will also be shown and course book is included.

Breastfeeding Class 

Dates, Times & Locations:

• 2nd Wednesday every month, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at UCSD Medical Center Hillcrest, 1st floor, Cafeteria, Dining Room 2
• 1st Monday every month, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at UCSD Ambulatory Care Center, OB/Gyn Clinic
• 1st Thursday in February, April, June, August, October & December, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at UCSD Scripps Ranch, Suite 200

Overview: A one-time class that discusses the benefits of breastfeeding, basic techniques, nutrition and common problems.

Newborn Care

• 2nd Thursday of February, April, June, August, October & December, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at UCSD Medical Center Scripps Ranch, Suite 200

Overview: A one-time class on newborn care, including bathing, cord care, safety issues, and when to call the doctor.

Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Dates, Times & Locations:

1st Monday every month, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at UCSD Ambulatory care,

• 3rd Wednesday every month, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at UCSD Ambulatory Care Center, OB/Gyn Clinic
• 3rd Thursday in February, April, June, August, October and December, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at UCSD Scripps Ranch, Suite 200

Fee: $25 per person; $45 per couple
Overview: A one-time 1.5 hour class designed to teach parents and care providers how to perform CPR and choking rescue on infants up to 1 year of age. This is not a certification program. 

Diabetes and Pregnancy Class

Date & Time: Every Wednesday (call for time) 
Location: UCSD Ambulatory Care Center, OB/Gyn Clinic
Registration: For information, call the Diabetic Educator at (619) 543-5963.
Fee: Charge will be billed to your insurance.  You may have a charge, if insurance does not cover class
Overview: A one-time 3-hour class for pregnant women with diabetes. Topics include an overview of diabetes in pregnancy, nutrition, exercise and blood sugar monitoring.  You must have a physician's referral to attend.  

The UCSD Lactation Service

Overview: Breastfeeding is the best gift you can give yourself and your baby. The UCSD Lactation Service is committed to supporting families who choose to breastfeed. Combining the unique skills of physicians, nurse practitioners, certified lactation consultants and lactation educators, the UCSD Lactation Service includes prenatal consultations, postpartum personal instruction, assistance with special-needs babies, assistance with breastfeeding multiple births or premature births, information on drugs and breastfeeding, and outpatient appointments.
