Midwife Services

The UCSD Medical Center Nurse Midwifery Program works in partnership with the UCSD Department of Reproductive Medicine, and patients have the option of giving birth in the home-like atmosphere of the UCSD Birth Center.

What Is A Certified Nurse Midwife?

A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced nurse practitioner who specializes in providing pregnancy, birth and postpartum care to families. In addition, she or he may offer well-woman care, family planning and other services. All CNMs are registered nurses and have graduated from a master's-level, specialized nurse-midwifery program. They are accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), have passed a national certification exam and have met strict requirements set by state health agencies.

Certified Nurse Midwives offer full scope, family-centered maternity care and are specialists in caring for healthy, low-risk women and their infants. With an emphasis on education and the patient's involvement with her own care, the midwives work in collaboration with physicians and perinatal specialists. Multiple national studies have shown that nurse midwives provide safe, thorough and satisfying care.
