Diabetes in Pregnancy

The UCSD Diabetes in Pregnancy Service is committed to providing you with the special care you need throughout your pregnancy. Whether you have had diabetes for some time, or recent tests have shown elevated blood sugar levels for the first time during your pregnancy, you probably have some questions regarding the care you will need. As health care professionals specializing in the care of women with diabetes in pregnancy, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Our number one goal is healthy babies and healthy moms!

Planning Your Care Together

The UCSD Diabetes in Pregnancy Service uses a team approach in caring for our patients. The team consists of the following members:

  • Obstetricians who will manage your pregnancy, and determine the best plan for delivery, consulting with staff perinatologists (obstetricians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies)
  • A diabetes nurse educator, who will teach you about diabetes, how to monitor your blood sugar levels and how to administer insulin, if necessary
  • A dietitian, who will help you plan menus that are nutritious and acceptable to you and your family.
  • A social worker who will assist you with any personal, family or financial needs you may have
  • Clinical nurses and clerical staff who will arrange clinic and test appointments

We want you to be a partner in your own team. Together, we will plan your care so that you and your baby get the best possible attention.
