| Since some patients will require long term hospitalization, our specially trained perinatal nurses -- who are part of a multidisciplinary team including obstetricians, perinatologists, neonatologists, social workers, physical therapists and case managers -- provide high-risk maternity patients and their families with personalized and compassionate care. A patient support group meets once a week on the unit to address psychosocial needs, and individualized childbirth education occurs one on one.
We address survival skills of a high-risk pregnancy and provide other services during hospitalization such as massage therapy, crafts, doula care, and access to Verizon for wireless Internet. Each patient receives a follow-up courtesy telephone call by a perinatal nurse within five days after discharge to ask “how are you doing at home” and answer any questions.
About our center
The Perinatal Special Care Center, one of only two such perinatal units in San Diego and Imperial counties, is located at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest on the 7th floor. It has nine beds and offers state-of-the-art technology and equipment to monitor the condition of each patient and her unborn baby. In an effort to promote independence and satisfaction, each room is equipped with a small refrigerator and a comfortable recliner or bed for family rest periods, since visiting hours are 24/7.
In the event that transfer to Labor & Delivery on the second floor is urgent, it's only a quick elevator ride away.
