What's a High-Risk Pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which some condition puts the mother,
the developing fetus, or both at higher-than-normal risk for complications
during or after the pregnancy and birth.

You may be a high-risk pregnancy patient if you:

  • Will be 35 years of age or older when you conceive
  • Are younger than 15 when you conceive
  • Have had a child with birth defects
  • Have a family history of birth defects
  • Have a history of complications with prior pregnancies
  • Have a serious medical condition, such as high blood pressure, insulin-dependent (Type I) diabetes, cancer or heart disease
  • Have inflammatory bowel disease or auto-immune disorders
