Fibroid Symptoms: When to See a Doctor
You may benefit from medical treatment if fibroids are causing the following symptoms:
- Heavy, prolonged periods, sometimes with clots, or irregular periods
- Anemia (fatigues caused by low red blood count)
- Pain or pressure between the hip bones or in the back of the legs
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Frequent need to urinate, or urinary retention
- Constipation or bloating
- Enlarged abdomen
- Watery vaginal discharge
Some basic questions you may want to ask your doctor include:
- How do you typically treat symptomatic fibroids? Why?
- What are the surgical and non-surgical options for treating my specific condition?
- What are the advantages, risks and benefits of each of the fibroid treatments?
- Have all the necessary diagnostic tests been performed specific to my condition?
- Will fibroids affect my ability to become pregnant?
- Can treatment improve my fertility?
Make sure you understand completely everything that your doctor tells you. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor to repeat information or to ask follow-up questions for clarification.
