Visiting a Patient

Calling a Patient 
  • To call a patient at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest, dial (619) 543-6222 and ask for the patient by name.

Visiting a Patient

Children under 10 years of age are not permitted in patient care areas, unless special arrangements have been made in advance. Children are permitted in waiting areas of the hospital when accompanied by an adult.  

For the well being of the patient, only two family members or visitors are allowed to visit at one time. Visits should be brief. Facilities may not be available for visitors to remain overnight. Please check with the patient’s nurse for further details.

Cellular Phone Restrictions

Cell phones can interfere with medical equipment and may not be used in patient care areas. Our staff will direct visitors to public telephones or areas where they may use cell phones.

Café

Visitors are welcome to dine in the café, located on the first floor of each hospital. Food and beverages may be taken out of the café in covered containers provided near the cashier stands. Meals are served at the following times:

  • UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest
    Breakfast: 6:30 a.m. - 10 a.m.
    Lunch: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
    Dinner:  4:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
    Late Meal: 11 p.m. - 2 a.m.
  • UCSD Thornton Hospital, La Jolla
    Breakfast: 6:30 a.m.  - 10 a.m.
    Lunch: 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
    Dinner: 4:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
    Late meal not available
Vending Machines

Food and beverage vending machines are located in the café and are accessible 24 hours a day.  Beverages, ice cream, snacks, sandwiches, and meals ready for microwave reheating are available for your convenience.

Vending machines are also located in various waiting areas on each floor within the hospitals.

Meal Delivery

Guests are invited to enjoy a guest or gourmet meal delivered directly to the patient's room. There is a nominal fee for this service. 

To request meal delivery, call the Support Service Call Center at (619) 543-3255, or ext. 33255 from within the hospital.

Automated Teller Machine (ATM)

The ATM at the Hillcrest medical center is located on the first floor hallway by the Emergency Department.

At Thornton Hospital, the ATM machine is in the first floor lobby near the Dining Room. 

Sending a Gift to a Patient

Reading materials, flowers, balloons, stamps, toiletries and gift items are all available at the Gift Shops located inside each hospital.

  • At UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest, the Gift Shop is located on the first floor near the Information Desk in the main lobby. Call (619) 543-5926
  • At UCSD Thornton Hospital, La Jolla, the Gift Shop is located on the first floor, in the main lobby. Call (858) 657-6583

To send a gift from outside the hospital, please put the patient’s name along with the hospital’s name and address on the package:
