Sleep Studies
If you have problems with sleep and suspect you have a sleep disorder, your doctor might recommend a sleep study.
A sleep study is a non-invasive exam that allows doctors to see what's happening in your brain and body while you sleep overnight at our Sleep Center Lab or at home if sleep apnea is suspected.
Sleep Study at our Lab
We offer comprehensive overnight sleep studies (also known as a polysomnogram) at our state-of-the-art sleep center located in La Jolla in the San Diego area. The study is offered six nights per week and managed by trained sleep technologists.
Overnight sleep studies help us diagnose sleep disorders and can also can be done with a continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP) machine to determine the optimal settings on the device. Sometimes both components can be done in the same night study.
The polysomnogram records certain body functions while you sleep such as:
- Brain waves (electrical activity)
- The amount of oxygen in the blood
- Eye movement
- Airflow
- Heart rate and rhythm
- Electrical activity of muscles
- Body position and limb movements
- Breathing rate
Our Overnight Sleep Center is located at 4520 Executive Drive.
Home Sleep Study
We offer at-home diagnostic testing for the diagnosis of sleep apnea. This is a simplified version of an overnight sleep study in the sleep lab as it involves fewer sensors, the convenience of doing it at home, and a faster turnaround time for scheduling and results.
However, it may not be best suited for all patients and insurance may not cover the cost in certain situations. Your sleep medicine provider will make the recommendation about the best sleep study option for you.
If you are scheduled for a home study, you will pick up the monitor from our Sleep Center, where we will show you how to place the sensors. We analyze the data once the device is returned.
