Our Community Affairs team guides community relations and outreach efforts for UC San Diego Health and works to improve the community's access to essential health care services.
UC San Diego Health services in the community totaled $476 million in the 2019 fiscal year. This includes care for people who are underinsured or have no insurance, and participation and leadership in a variety of health education and outreach programs.

The Community Affairs team has been nationally recognized for its community outreach initiatives, including the UC San Diego Health High School Sponsorship Academy, Student-Run Health Clinics and Screenings, the Health Careers Opportunity Program, various LGBT Initiatives, and facilities tours.
In addition Community Affairs coordinates funding and resource allocation to local community partners and organizations through open dialogue with internal stakeholders.

David Mier, Assistant Director of Community Strategy and Advocacy
David Mier is the assistant director of community strategy and advocacy and the team lead in community outreach. He joined the team in 2012. In addition to his community outreach responsibilities, Mier also serves as the vice-chair of the UC San Diego Health Diversity Committee, the communications director of the UC San Diego Center for Investigation of Health and Education Disparities, and a member of the Altman Clinical and Translational Institute (ACTRI) Community Advisory Board.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Mier worked as a business outreach coordinator for the South County Economic Development Council, managing business attraction and retention, as well as workforce development efforts throughout the South Bay area of San Diego. He also served as a municipal elections consultant for the Office of the City Clerk for the cities of Rosemead and Arcadia.
In addition to his work at UC San Diego Health, Mier is also actively involved in the local community, where he serves as a board member for both MANA de San Diego and the Urban Community Collaborative Project. He is also a member of PIQE (Parent Institute for Quality Education), the South County Economic Development Council’s workforce and education committees, and the San Diego Padre’s Hispanic Community Leadership Council.
Mier has earned numerous awards including the UC San Diego 2016 Health Diversity Champion Award. He’s also been recognized as one of San Diego’s “40 Under 40” by San Diego Metro Magazine for his active leadership in the community and at UC San Diego Health.
Mier studied at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego for two years and served as a Leon Panetta fellow at the Panetta Institute for Public Policy in Washington D.C., and subsequently worked for Congressman David Dreier. Mier holds a bachelor of arts, magna cum laude, with a double major in political science and philosophy from California Polytechnic University.
Mier is married and lives with his wife and cat in Mission Hills. He speaks fluent Spanish.
