The Emergency Department at UCSD Hillcrest offers high standard, excellent patient care to a variety of patient demographics ranging from pediatric medicine, adult medicine, and geriatric medicine.  Medical treatment is based upon using evidence based practice and the latest research in academic emergency medicine.. The emergency Department can handle complex medical and surgical patients. Hillcrest is a Level 1 Trauma center, the Regional Burn Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, STEMI receiving center, Hyperbaric center and provides services for the psychiatric patient population.  Hillcrest is also a base station hospital and works closely with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services.  Hillcrest sees approximately 49,000 patients per year.  A multidisciplinary approach in patient care including, faculty physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and case managers are utilized.  EPIC is the EMR in our unit.  the emergency department provides comprehensive emergency services including 24 hour laboratory, surgical, trauma, cardiac, neurology, and radiology diagnostic services.

Several exciting innovations have recently been incorporated into the care of patients in the ED. One is the Stroke Center certification earned by the Neurology Department in collaboration with the ED. Another is the recently incorporated "STEMI" ST elevation MI protocol that allows medics in the field to initiate a cardiology consultation prior to the patient arriving in the ED and UC San Diego Health System hospitals. This leads to rapid activation of the Cardiac Catheterization Team.
