UC San Diego GI Nurses
UC San Diego Gastrointestinal Endoscopy/Special Procedures holds the distinction of being a 2009 ASGE Recognition Honoree and is part of the only academic medical center in San Diego. Everyday, our nurses exhibit enthusiasm and expertise as they provide the highest quality of nursing care to our valued patient population. Servicing outpatient and inpatient areas, our nursing staff experience variety in each patient’s unique situation and also through the different areas of the GI suite including intake, procedure, and recovery. 

Scope of Service

The services we provide include a wide range of endoscopic interventional procedures such as balloon and savory dilation, stent placement, variceal ligation, ablation and cholangitis related interventions. Diagnostic procedures include Bravo placement, capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), EUS, fine needle aspiration and liver biopsy. Nurses provide moderate sedation in most cases and assist in higher risk cases requiring general anesthesia. Hillcrest department typically handles Adult patients with over 400 outpatient visits per month and over 50 inpatient visits per month.  La Jolla department handles Adults and some pediatrics (age 12-17) in particular with IBD and has over 700 outpatient visits per month and over 100 inpatient visits per month.
Our department is also equipped to travel to critical care areas for emergent cases.

  • Hillcrest - 4 Pre Procedure Chairs, 7 Gurneys, 3 Procedure Rooms
  • La Jolla - 14 Pre Procedure and Recovery Beds

Specialty Programs/Certifications:

CGRN preferred. Must have ACLS, willingness to obtain PALS. Must complete moderate sedation course within 6 months of hire.,

Who We Are

Our nurses come from a wide range of clinical background including transplant, women’s services, and critical care. Opportunities abound for teaching and expanding clinical knowledge through service on unit based and hospital wide committees. The team consists of Registered Nurses and GI Technicians that perform as a cohesive team in a very fast paced unit.

Gastroenterology hosts a GUT's conference that is staff driven and run each year as it continues to establish its reputation in the San Diego Nursing community as a center for nursing excellence.  The Hillcrest GI received the quality award from American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for providing safety and quality in GI endoscopy.

Ideal Candidates

As a nurse in our department you can anticipate training specific to both of our unique locations and customized to your experience level. A dedicated preceptor will guide you through this training period to ensure the best experience possible. An ideal candidate will have a background in an acute care setting (ICU, ER, TELE), sedation background, a team-focused work ethic, and sensitivity to cultural diversity. Communication and teaching skills are required as well as strong critical thinking skills and a desire to take on the responsibilities inherent to the procedural setting.
