Dr. Agrawal 

Kunal Agrawal, MD

Kunal Agrawal, MD, specializes in vascular neurology and stroke treatment, focusing on the spectrum of stroke care, including prevention, acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, and post-acute stroke care. He also conducts research on neurorehabilitation and post-stroke therapeutics.

Dr. Carter 

Bob S. Carter, MD

Bob S. Carter, MD, is the chief of neurosurgery and co-leads the brain tumor program at UC San Diego Health. In 2013 he was named a Top Doc in San Diego Magazine's "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence." Dr. Carter specializes complex intracranial surgery, including cerebral bypass and aneurysm surgery.


Branko Huisa-Garate, MD

Branko Huisa-Garate, MD, is director of the stroke fellowship program at UC San Diego Health. As a vascular neurologist, he specializes in treating cerebrovascular diseases such as acute ischemic stroke, cerebrovascular malformations, vascular dementia and vascular cognitive impairment.

Thomas Hemmen        

Thomas Hemmen, MD, PhD

Thomas Hemmen, MD, PhD, is the director of the stroke program and cerebrovascular fellowship program. He has broad clinical expertise in neurology, cerebrovascular disease and neurological critical care. Dr. Hemmen is the principle investigator of various clinical trials, searching for new cures in all areas of cerebrovascular medicine.

Dr. Karanjia

Navaz Karanjia, MD

Navaz Karanjia, MD, is the medical director of our neurocritical care program and neuro-intensive care unit (ICU), which she founded. She earned her medical degree from Stanford and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. Dr. Karanjia is a member of the American Heart Association, Neurocritical Care Society, and American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Khalessi

Alexander A. Khalessi, MD, MS

Alexander A. Khalessi, MD, MS, is the director of neurovascular surgery and surgical director of neurocritical care. He specializes in cranial and endovascular neurosurgery, and holds several national leadership positions in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease. Dr. Khalessi offers a range of alternatives for cerebrovascualr and complex cranial disease.

Dr. B. Meyer

Brett C. Meyer, MD

Brett C. Meyer, MD, is the medical director for enterprise telemedicine and the co-director for the stroke program. He specializes in acute cerebrovascular disease therapies and technological evaluation and treatment techniques. Dr. Meyer has won several awards for his expertise in clinical teaching.

Dawn Meyer, NP, PhD

Dawn M. Meyer, NP, PhD
Nurse Practitioner

Dawn M. Meyer, NP, PhD, is a nationally certified family nurse practitioner focusing on the acute treatment of strokes and secondary stroke prevention. She is currently exploring the use of antiplatelet treatment as a cost-effective alternative to stroke prevention. By increasing understanding of the relationship between antiplatelet treatment and stroke-related problems, Dr. Meyer helps serve the 800,000 Americans who get acute stroke each year.

Dr. Modir

Royya Modir, MD

Royya Modir, MD, specializes in the field of stroke and vascular neurology, with a focus on pre-hospital stroke care and hyperacute management of stroke. Dr. Modir provides education and training to medical students in the treatment and management of cerebrovascular disease, and has been a co-investigator in many clinical trials.


Scott E. Olson, MD

Scott E. Olson, MD, specializes in cerebrovascular disease, including minimally invasive, image-guided treatment of complex vascular disorders of the nervous system. He treats patients with stroke/transient ischemic attack, brain aneurysms, and other vascular conditions of the brain.

J. Scott Pannell, MD, specializes in endovascular neurosurgery and neuroradiology. He focuses on the catheter-based treatment of ischemic stroke, cerebral aneurysms, and other endovascular conditions.
