Research and Clinical Trials

UC San Diego Health’s surgeons and scientists work side-by-side to advance orthopedic and sports medicine care. Our scientists are exposed to the most important clinical problems and empowered to study them. At the same time, our surgeons are provided with the most modern tools available to prevent, study or repair injured tissue. Some of our faculty members current research topics include:

  • The cause and repair of muscle injury
  • The use of anti-inflammatory medications to heal tissues
  • Diagnostics to study muscle, tendon, ligament and bone
  • The role of exercise in injury prevention and recovery
  • Exercise interventions to improve health and prevent type 2 diabetes
  • Novel rehabilitation methods for injury recovery
  • Modeling to improve post-surgical repair
  • Creation of novel intraoperative tools to assist surgeons during procedures
