Psychiatrist-in-Chief, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Behavioral Health

Steve Koh, MD, MPH, MBA, serves as psychiatrist-in-chief and associate chief medical officer for behavioral health at UC San Diego Health. In this dual leadership role, Dr. Koh oversees the strategic and operational advancement of behavioral health services across the health system, working closely with the nationally recognized UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry.
As psychiatrist-in-chief, Dr. Koh leads psychiatric care across UC San Diego Health, advancing the growth and integration of behavioral health services systemwide. He oversees the East Campus Behavioral Health Hub, ensuring the seamless alignment of patient access, care coordination and clinical quality. Additionally, he manages partnerships with San Diego County Behavioral Health Services, San Diego City Fire-Rescue, Federally Qualified Health Centers and other regional health systems to expand access to comprehensive mental health care throughout the community.
Dr. Koh also supports research, clinical innovation and workforce development in partnership with the Department of Psychiatry, while championing mental health and wellness initiatives for UC San Diego students, employees and physicians.
As associate chief medical officer for behavioral health, he oversees behavioral health operations across Hillcrest, La Jolla and East Campus, focusing on quality, patient satisfaction and provider well-being. He plays a pivotal role in enhancing care quality and patient satisfaction, collaborating across clinical and administrative teams to strengthen outcomes and system reliability.
He is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He serves as the psychiatric advisor to the American Medical Association RVS Update Committee and is the past president of the San Diego County Medical Society.
Dr. Koh completed his medical degree, residency and fellowship training at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and earned master's degrees in public health and business administration from Johns Hopkins University. He is board-certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.
