Our Community Affairs team guides community relations and outreach efforts for UC San Diego Health and works to improve the community's access to essential health care services.
UC San Diego Health services in the community totaled $476 million in the 2019 fiscal year. This includes care for people who are underinsured or have no insurance, and participation and leadership in a variety of health education and outreach programs.

The Community Affairs team has been nationally recognized for its community outreach initiatives, including the UC San Diego Health High School Sponsorship Academy, Student-Run Health Clinics and Screenings, the Health Careers Opportunity Program, various LGBT Initiatives, and facilities tours.
In addition Community Affairs coordinates funding and resource allocation to local community partners and organizations through open dialogue with internal stakeholders.

David Mier, Director of Health Community Relations
David Mier leads the institution’s strategic public engagement and community benefit initiatives. His key responsibilities include developing and implementing organizational plans for strategic community partnerships and advocacy initiatives, including several nationally recognized public health initiatives.
In addition to his external community strategy and engagement responsibilities, Mier also serves as the communications director of the UC San Diego School of Medicine Center for Investigation of Health and Education Disparities, as a member of the Altman Clinical and Translational Institute Community Advisory Board and on the executive board of the UC San Diego Health Diversity Staff Association.
Mier’s work at UC San Diego Health has earned numerous awards and recognitions over the years for both the institution and him personally, including a 2019 San Diego Health Care Communicators Award recognizing the health system’s LGBTQ initiatives and the UC San Diego 2016 Health Diversity Champion Award for system-wide efforts to empower our diverse faculty, staff, patients, students, visitors. He was also recognized as one of San Diego’s “40 Under 40” by
San Diego Metro Magazine for his active leadership in the community.
In addition to his work at UC San Diego Health, Mier is also actively involved in the local community, where he serves in leadership roles as a board member for MANA de San Diego and the San Diego Padre’s Hispanic Community Leadership Council and as an active volunteer and member of several community and nonprofit organizations, including the Stone Wall Citizens Patrol. David is also a graduate of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Lead San Diego 2020 Impact Class.
Mier holds Bachelor of Arts in political science and philosophy, graduating with honors in 2006 from California Polytechnic University, Pomona. Mier then served as a Leon Panetta fellow at the Panetta Institute for Public Policy in Washington D.C., where he worked for Congressman David Dreier.
