Chief Operating Officer – Clinical Practice Organization
As chief operating officer – Clinical Practice Organization (COO-CPO), Mark Behl oversees all operational and financial units of UC San Diego Health’s physician practices, including fiscal services, physician benefits, billing and collections, compliance, and management of ambulatory operations.
Mr. Behl helps define clinical administrative structures within the School of Medicine and new strategic directions for the practice. He also supervises physician human resources, collaborates to devise financially sound tools for clinical budgeting and planning, and develops programs to enhance clinical quality.
As a member of UC San Diego Health’s Executive Team, Mr. Behl works closely with other members of the health system to integrate cross-departmental programs and clinical programs.
His top priorities are to assess and optimize our outpatient clinics in terms of operational structure, clinic utilization and staffing levels, and to address process efficiency of our outpatient programs.
With 23 years of experience in operations management, Mr. Behl is well suited to the task. He was most recently vice president of Renown Health and CEO of Renown Medical Group in Reno, Nev., a not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving a 17-county region with three acute care hospitals, a rehabilitation hospital, skilled nursing, the area’s most comprehensive medical group, and an urgent care network.
Mr. Behl is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), American Medical Group Association (AMGA), and Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). He has been a national speaker on the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) delivery model and has volunteered as a board member for American Red Cross and various nonprofits.
Mr. Behl earned a Master of Business Administration from University of Nevada, Reno, and a Master of Healthcare Administration from Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He and his wife Sara enjoy raising their family of five children.
