Goodies from the Heart that Help Comfort and Heal

Handmade gifts for our patients encourage and facilitate their recovery. The gifts, which are given to patients when appropriate, convey the community's interest in their well-being. The gifts are distributed by volunteers and are appreciated by our patients.

  • blanket for newbornsLap robes or afghans:
Patients enjoy having a coverlet to use during their hospital stay. Crocheted, knitted or quilted lap robes and afghans can be distributed to our inpatients.
  • Hats for cancer patients: Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy often lose some or all of their hair, leaving their scalp very sensitive. Caps or turbans made of soft cotton help to protect their sensitive scalp. Many hats can be lined so that the seams don't irritate or chafe the scalp. Material should be very soft in texture and moderate in color.
  • card message: you bring so much light into the world Cards: Most patients enjoy receiving mail and handmade cards, which can help brighten their day and let them know their community is thinking of them.
Because of various kinds of prognoses, we discourage the use of "Get Well Soon" as a message. Alternatives could include poems, "Thinking of You" and other simple messages of encouragement.
Cards may be handmade or bought and donated. (Please do not use glitter or confetti). This is a great opportunity for youth groups, service groups or classrooms to begin their volunteering experience. Be creative!
  • Pillows: Heart-shaped pillows can be given to our cardiology patients who have undergone heart surgery. Coughing to keep the lungs clear is encouraged prior to discharge, so these special pillows help patients brace their tender chests while coughing. Jelly-bean-shaped pillows can be distributed to our oncology patients to provide neck support.
All pillows should be firmly stuffed with new polyester fill and made with cotton or cotton-blend material.
