Open enrollment is the time each year when you can enroll in health insurance or change your existing health plan. The dates depend on the type of coverage you have. If you want access to specific doctors, hospitals or health systems, review the network before enrolling.

There is no single open enrollment period for every type of health insurance. Dates vary by coverage type, so check the specific deadlines: 

• Employer-sponsored plans: Dates vary by employer 
• Covered California: November 1 - January 31
• Medicare: October 15 - December 7

No. Most health plans have a future effective date. Your new coverage typically begins after your enrollment is processed and the plan becomes active. Check with your new health plan for your specific coverage start date. 

Check whether your current employer-sponsored health plan renews automatically for another year. Otherwise, you may need to wait until the next open enrollment period unless you qualify for a special enrollment period. This may allow you to change coverage after certain qualifying life events, such as getting married, having a baby, moving or losing other health coverage. Medi-Cal enrollment is available year-round for low-income people who qualify. 

Yes. If your current health plan includes UC San Diego Health, you may be able to select a UC San Diego Health primary care physician or transfer your care to our network.
