Thornton 3 East Med Surg

Type of patients and scope of practice: This unit features private and semi-private patient rooms, 5:1 patient ratio and specialize in acute medical condition such as Crohn's disease, meningitis, sickle-cell crisis, cellulitis, pulmonary/infectious disease and diabetes.

Location: La Jolla-Thornton 3rd Floor  

Number of Beds: 27   

Ideal Candidates: We require a CA Rn license, BART (BCLS) certification, minimum 1 year of recent RN experience in a medical surgical unit.  Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  Certified Medical Surgery RN (CMSRN) and experience in a teaching facility is preferred.

Specialty programs or certifications: As a unit, we partner with Thornton 3 West and participate in patient research and sponsor the annual BONES (Bonafide Orthopedic Nursing Education Symposium) which is the largest Ortho Nursing Education day in San Diego.

Training programs: Newly hired staff are required to complete a competency-based orientation which is individualized to the newly hired staff based on experience level and competency in the specialty.  We participate in the New Grad Residency Program (NGRP) and the length of orientation is determined by the nurse manager in collaboration with the unit preceptor.

Brief description/culture: 95% of our nursing staff are BSN prepared and 52% of the staff are certified medical surgical RN's.  3 East received the "Power of customer Satisfaction" service Excellence Award (The WOW factor).
