Type of patients and scope of practice: This unit features private rooms, 5:1 patient ratio and focuses primarily on orthopedic and neurosurgery patients, all ages and some medical surgical patients as well. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery has expertise in cartilage restoration and transplantation, foot and ankle surgery, hand and upper extremity surgery, joint replacement and arthritis surgery, orthopedic trauma, physical medicine and rehabilitation and spine surgery.

Ideal Candidates: We require a CA Rn license, BART (BCLS) certification, minimum 1 year of recent RN experience in an Ortho acute setting and medical surgical unit. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Orthopedic Nurse Certifications (ONC), Certified Medical Surgery RN (CMSRN) and experience in a teaching facility is preferred.
Specialty programs or certifications: As a unit, we partner with Thornton 3 East and participate in patient research and sponsor the annual BONES (Bonafide Orthopedic Nursing Education Symposium) which is the largest Ortho Nursing Education day in San Diego.
Training programs: Newly hired staff are required to complete a competency-based orientation which is individualized to the newly hired staff based on experience level and competency in the specialty. We participate in the New Grad Residency Program (NGRP) and the length of orientation is determined by the nurse manager in collaboration with the unit preceptor.
