Hillcrest 10 ICU

Patients don’t plan a stay in a critical care unit, they find themselves there. At UC San Diego Health System’s CCU we know that the foundation of health care comes from more than the evidence-based practice, cutting edge procedures and innovative treatments that UCSD is renowned for. It comes from the people who deliver them. To that end we make acquiring, training and retaining skilled, personable and devoted nurses our priority. Professionals who enjoy their job, excel at their job. Our staff has created a culture of collaboration, mentorship and support unique in the industry. Our management provides opportunities for staff to directly affect unit policies, while encouraging professional, intellectual, spiritual and familial pursuits outside the stress of the critical care environment. We believe that balanced lives allow our staff to evoke the best of themselves during the most challenging times that our patients and their families face.

Scope of Service/Type of Patients:

The 13-bed Medical Coronary Contained Unit specializes in Pre and post-Cardiac Transplants, Congestive Heart Failure, Acute MI, CVVHD, and complex ventilation using the latest equipment and technologies. The Charge and Code RNs are readily available to assist with complex patients. Our physician partners are true professors who are willing to invest the time and energy to provide education specific to treatment and research. The unit is actively involved in promoting community health. The patient caseload includes Heart/Lung Transplant, Cardiac cases with post MI, Sepsis, ARDS, COPD exacerbation, Acute Coronary Syndrome, Heart Failure/Cardiomyopathy, Stroke patients, ICH, SDH, SAH, Seizure disorder, IABP, Med/Surg and Trauma cases. The 10 ICU also houses the Code Blue/Rapid Response nurse, whose responsibility is to respond to all Code Blues/RRTs in the hospital.  This unit takes a lot of pride in our CODE Team and the service and education we provide to our patients and hospital community.

Who we are:

As the only academic medical center in San Diego, UC San Diego Medical Center sets the standard for critical care nurses who want to practice at the leading edge.

We were also the first JCAHO certified Stroke Center in San Diego, the benchmark for the American Heart Association in Acute MI, and a major contributor to advanced stroke research in hypothermia therapy in cardiac arrest, and sedation management.

Our CCU is a mixed, disciplinary unit. It has both cardiology, neuro/stroke and medical intensive care components.

Specialty Programs/Certifications:

Ideal Candidates:

We require a California licensed RN with CPR and ACLS certifications. Successful candidates will have at least 2 years of acute care experience in the ICU, the personal commitment to provide exceptional care to high acuity patients and their families, and vision to support community wellness.

Training Programs:

We offer a quarterly Critical Care Internship program for New Grads and nurses without critical care experience. For consideration you must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, an externship in Critical Care is preferred, and volunteer experience is a plus. The Orientation Program is minimally 12 weeks with both clinical and didactic components. New graduates will have an additional 12-week mentorship with an expert nurse and attend ongoing training classes. Because we are the only academic medical center in San Diego, we offer a teaching and research environment unequaled in continuing educational opportunities.
