Scope of Practice/Type of Patients:

As the only academic medical center in San Diego, UC San Diego Medical Center sets the standard for experienced professionals who want to practice OR nursing at the leading edge. We care for adult and neonatal patients and occasionally pediatric patients.  Services we provide: Cardio Thoracic, General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Minimally Invasive using the da Vinci® robotic system, Robotics, Bariatric, Vascular, Reproductive Medicine, Gynecology, GYN Oncology, GYN-Urology, Head and Neck, Burn and Trauma (Hillcrest only), Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Neuro Surgery (Intraoperative MRI and CT Suites at JMC only), Orthopedic, Ophthalmology, Transplantation (Abdominal and cardiothoracic). We perform over 7,000 cases annually.


Hillcrest: Main and Outpatient OR (2nd floor)

La Jolla: Jacobs Medical Center, Thornton, and SCVC OR

Number of Beds:

  • Hillcrest: 10 Main OR Beds and 4 outpatient OR Beds
  • La Jolla: 23 OR Beds (including 2 Intraoperative MRI and 2 Intraoperative CT OR's)

Specialty Programs/Certifications:

CNOR certification preferred

Who We Are:

UCSD has San Diego's only Intraoperative MRI and CT OR's. This new and exciting technology allows surgeons the ability to assess brain shift and refine the surgical plan, prior to closing the surgical site. 

We have a robust transplant program which includes kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lungs, and heart/lung/  Solid organ transplantation offers the best treatment option for improved quality of life for people of all ages with end-stage solid organ disease.  These advanced technology and treatments require transplant nurses to make an exciting lifelong commitment to learning.

As San Diego's Regional Burn Center, UCSD Hillcrest provides surgical burn care to patients suffering from mild, severe, and life-threatening burn injuries.  We employ leading-edge treatments, advanced diagnostic and surgical techniques, and a comprehensive team approach to burn care, we are able to respond to even the most complex medical issues.

Ideal Candidates: 

Ideal candidates for both locations will have a valid CA RN license with BCLS certification with a minimum 2 years of OR experience in a variety of surgical specialties. CNOR preferred. Recent operating room experience as a circulating nurse, with scrub nurse experience preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, works well in teams, and enjoys learning and growing professionally.
