At Bannister Family House, our mission is to provide a home away from home for families with a loved one in long-term or critical care at UC San Diego Health. Here, families can create a community of healing in a loving environment.
We provide all the comforts of
home -- a place to rest, a kitchen to prep meals or enjoy a volunteer-hosted meal, a spot to do laundry, and community spaces where guests can interact with other families experiencing similar challenges.
This haven of hope and comfort allows families to heal, together. For 25 years, we have welcomed more than 6,000 families from around the world. And we look forward to helping even more families in need with the opening of our second home, the La Jolla Family House.
Coming Soon – The La Jolla Family House
Our current capacity at Bannister Family House is limited to roughly 18 families per month, and with the expansion of clinical services in La Jolla, we need to expand our program to accommodate even more families in need. We are excited to welcome a new home, the La Jolla Family House, in March 2020.

Bannister Family House History and Mission
The late Ralph Bannister's generous donation enabled UC San Diego Health to construct Bannister Family House. The house is named in memory of his late wife, Stella, and his late daughter, Joann. While the Bannister Family House is affiliated with UC San Diego Health, it is not funded by the revenue generated from clinical services. The Bannister Family House is a non-profit 501(c)3 and relies heavily on the private support of individuals, corporations and foundations to operate on a daily basis.
