Gynecologic Cancer Treatment at UC San Diego Health

Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health is the only cancer facility in San Diego designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. In fact, only 45 centers nationwide have earned this distinction. Our gynecologic oncologists provide care for women with cancer of the reproductive tract and conduct research to improve diagnosis methods and treatments.

We are San Diego's only medical institution affiliated with the Gynecologic Oncology Group, a nonprofit international organization supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes for Health (NIH). This means we can offer NIH-supported clinical trials of new therapies not available elsewhere in San Diego.

Our patients also have access to innovative industry-sponsored trials. For some patients, minimally invasive and robotic surgery may be an option. We offer intraperitoneal chemotherapy, the new NCI standard of care for some ovarian cancers.

We are also at the fore in using radiation therapies (such as high-dose rate brachytherapy and whole pelvic radiotherapy) to treat gynecologic cancers, alone or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Our radiation oncologists are experts in adapting each person's treatment plan to the type and stage of cancer, as well as to her overall health. In women with early-stage cervical or vaginal cancer, for example, radiation may be the sole treatment while for those with endometrial cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes radiation therapy will likely be delivered after surgery.
