Palliative Care Psychiatry

Palliative care psychiatry is the discipline of psychiatry within an interdisciplinary palliative care team.

The goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and their family. It is specialized medical care for people with complex, progressive, and potentially life-limiting illness, including cancer.  This care is focused on providing relief from physical, psychological, social, spiritual, or other distress. It can be offered to both hospital inpatients and to those receiving outpatient care at Moores Cancer Center.

Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work with a patient’s primary team to deliver an extra layer of support. Our palliative care psychiatry team works directly as part of the palliative care service at UC San Diego Health.

Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage of illness, and can be provided together with curative treatment, or when appropriate, become the sole focus of care.
