Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are part of a long, careful research process that can last many years. The search for good cardiovascular treatments begins with basic research in a lab, followed by animal studies to test safety and efficacy before the treatments are tested in humans. The best results of that research are then tried in patient studies, usually done in phases. New cardiovascular treatments must prove to be safe and effective before they can be made widely available. Most clinical trials study new drugs or procedures in order to receive approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

At UC San Diego Health, we are active in many clinical trials conducted by investigators from a variety of disciplines at UC San Diego. Because we are the only academic health system in the region, you may also benefit from the novel therapies and clinical trials developed through our innovative research.
