Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health

UC San Diego Health’s tropical medicine and infectious disease specialists offer detailed, destination-specific consults for international travelers.

Our pre-travel medical consultation services cover topics such as:

  • Food and water precautions
  • Malaria and other insect bites
  • Altitude sickness
  • Inoculations (those recommended and required for entry into certain countries)
  • Drug prophylaxis to prevent malaria, diarrhea and diarrheal-related disease

We also offer pre-travel medical exams and follow up visits for individuals who acquire an illness during international travel.

In addition, we have a pediatric travel medicine clinic to help ensure the safety and health of children travelling abroad. See Pediatric Travel Medicine.

Vaccines for Travelers

We offer all types of inoculations for travelers to protect against diseases such as:

  • Cholera
  • Hepatitis A
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Meningococcal meningitis
  • Rabies
  • Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow fever

Many immunizations require multiple injections and take weeks to reach full effectiveness so please make your travel clinic appointment as soon as possible after making your travel plans.

UC San Diego Health is part of Global TravEpiNet (GTEN), a national network of clinics that aims to improve the health of international travelers. The network is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
